Somatomedin C is most commonly known as the IGF-1, i.e. the insulin growth factor. This is produced after the release of the human growth hormone from the pituitary gland. The Somatomedin belongs to any of the peptides produced in the liver and is likely to mediate the activity of growth hormone.

Responsibilities of Somatomedin C:

This is often associated with the insulin growth factor, i.e. IGF-1 and is an important component to growth and developments especially at the age of adolescence and childhood. The pituitary gland is known as the master gland, as it is responsible for the maintenance, secretion and production of other hormone glands. Somatomedin C blood test results can be a bit erratic, as the level of growth hormones varies depending upon the age, time of the day and gender. IGF-1 is considered as the better indicator, as it is a bit static in regard to measurements.

How can the level of Somatomedin C be checked by a doctor??

The test of a Somatomedin C can also be called as a test of Insulin growth factor or the IGF-1 test. This test is not only meant for testing of the human growth hormone level, but also for checking the nutritional level that may decline due to malnutrition.

Reasons for Increase/Decrease of the Somatomedin C level:

This has been seen that the level of hormones decline with an increase in age. This case goes for the human growth hormone, the insulin growth factor hormone, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone among others. The level of Somatomedin C is measured in nanograms per millimeter. It has been observed that the very low level of Somatomedin C takes place at the very old or very young age. But, its decreased level may also occur because of the below listed reasons:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Pubertal delay
  • Hypopituitarism
  • Cirrhosis
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Malnutrition
  • Non functioning pituitary tumors
  • Hypothyroidism and many more.

The level of Somatomedin increases because of the given reasons:

  • Obesity
  • Pituitary gigantism
  • True precocious puberty
  • Adolescence
  • Acromegaly
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Cancer states and many more.

Effects on an individual on increase or decrease in the level of Somatomedin C:

If the patient is a child and the levels are low, the deficiency in the growth hormone may result in delayed development or short stature. If one is concerned with the deficiency of the Somatomedin C, then he/she is recommended to have a talk with the doctor, so as to get an accurate diagnosis and possible options in regard to the treatment.  Most of the individuals do not face any problem with the IGF-1 blood test; however some of the individuals feel a slight feeling of lightheadness, temporary pain caused by the needle injection, etc. IN order to make an accurate diagnosis along with a Somatomedin C blood test, there are additional tests as well as imaging technologies that are utilized in conjunction to it. These tests are listed below:

  • TSH
  • Insulin growth factor binding protein-3
  • Glucose test
  • Glucose tolerance test
  • Growth hormone releasing hormone test
  • Free t4
  • Growth hormone test
